Tips for Comparing Portable Storage Companies

All portable storage containers and providers are not created equal. To make sure you get the best quality product, value and customer service for your moving and portable storage needs you have to do your homework. Below are a few quick tips for what to look and ask for when searching for the best fit:

Does the company offer a watertight and structurally secure mobile storage container? In other words, does the container have an integrated roof system or a roof cap (e.g. like a shoebox)? An integrated roof system (with bowed roof) ensures the container is watertight and allows for the natural run-off of water. By contrast, a roof cap design can invite moisture, mold and insects.

Is the roof translucent? This is an important feature to inquire about, as it allows for optimal visibility while loading and unloading the storage container. Otherwise, you'll need a very strong flashlight and/or a bright, sunny day in order to try to see what's inside the container.

Is there a mechanism for securing your treasured belongings during transit? This is an essential to question to ask. You'll want an integrated channel strapping system to safely secure your fine furniture and belongings to the sides of the container for safekeeping during transit. Some companies merely offer eyehooks, or worse yet, nothing at all.

Does the portable storage provider have a secure, temperature-controlled (heat and A/C) warehouse? This is very important if you plan to store your container in a warehouse for any part of your rental, especially during the most severe seasons (e.g. summer and winter) when you want to ensure your belongings are free of humidity and the extreme outdoor elements. Some companies offer a "climate-controlled" warehouse, but that typically means heat only. And, some providers don't even offer traditional warehouses, but rather outdoor lots.

Is the company locally owned and operated with a dedicated customer care team, or are you dealing with an impersonal call center? Do you want to speak with someone who will handle your order from start to finish, and actually remember who you are from call to call? If so, be sure to inquire if the company is locally owned and operated or if you'll be "just another number."

Do you know all the pricing up front, or will it be "estimated" or subject to change (e.g. will your monthly rent fluctuate from month to month)? When you request a quote, be sure to ask for the monthly rental rate and ALL delivery fees, so there won't be any surprises. Ideally you should be given a monthly rental rate, which stays the same for the entire rental. Some companies will advertise the first month's rent and initial delivery fees only to lure you in, or charge you one amount for the first month's rent and then a higher fee for subsequent months. Get it in writing and keep it on file.
